How does math look in the W.C. 4th grade classroom?
Students will take ownership of their learning by creating their own math goals each week and by conferencing with the teacher about the goals that they have set. Students will fill out their goal sheet on a Google Doc which includes having them state their goal and list three things that they will do to reach their goal. Students are required to conference with the teacher at least once a week, more if necessary or requested. In the student-teacher conferences, students are discussing their goals, asking questions, and explaining what they have been and what they will be working on. Besides conferencing, teachers facilitating learning by making sure that learners are developing a proper understanding, preparing “fix-up” or helpful strategies and resources for students of all needs, and giving timely feedback to students about their progress.
How are the students learning?
Khan Academy is one of the main resources being utilized for student learning. “Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps.” -www.khanacademy.org
Besides Khan Academy, how else are students learning?
As well as using Khan Academy, students may use other materials and resources to help them learn certain skills. These resources will be made available online through the teacher’s website that has links to appropriate online help videos or activities. There may also be hands on manipulatives/materials that the teacher has for the students to use in aid of their learning. Students who have mastered a topic or standard well enough to be able to explain and teach it to someone else will be another great resource for student learning. After looking through the data on Khan Academy, as well as the data that is gathered through student-teacher conferencing, teachers will have 20 minute direct instruction, or coachings, on needed topics on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students that need extra help or practice with the skill being addressed.
How will students keep track of learning?
After students set a goal, they will sign up to take a pre-assessment using TenMarks on the task/standard that their goal incorporates. After taking the pre-assessment, students use Khan academy to learn, review, a practice math skills. Kahn Academy gives access to detailed reports about what skills students are struggling on, practicing, and mastering. As they master topics on Kahn Academy, they check off that topic on their portfolio on a Google Sheets. After mastering all of the topics within a certain Common Core State Standard, then the student may take the assessment on TenMarks. Students must achieve a 95% or higher to achieve mastery in that standard.
What happens if a mastery score of 95% or higher is not achieved?
If students take the TenMarks Assessment and do not obtain a mastery score, they are able to go back and practice that skill for better understanding for as long as they feel necessary,they can also ask for more coachings, or small group instruction, from the teacher or another student that has already mastered that task. When a student feels ready to retake the assessment, he/she will sign up and the assessment will be opened and ready to take the next day. If students are struggling with a skill or standard, teachers are able to conference with them and discuss taking a step back to master the prerequisite skills from the previous grade’s standards.
What happens when a standard is mastered at 95% or higher?
When a standard is mastered after taking the assessment on TenMarks, students will create an artifact to show their learning and mastery. They are able to make a poster or a technology based artifact that shows their knowledge. After making the artifact, students will review their goal, make a new one if needed, and continue on the path of learning and practicing. Once students have mastered all of the fourth grade standards, they are able to move onto the 5th grade standards.
